Level 5 Clinical/Remedial and Sports Soft Tissue Therapist
LSSM Dip. Level 5 MISRM, YA200HRS CYQ Yoga Instructor
My name is Matt Barker. I am a Clinical Remedial & Sports Soft Tissue Therapist with a Level 5 BTech Diploma qualification from the London School of Sports Massage. I am a member of the Institute for Sports and Remedial Massage, I'm first aid qualified, fully insured and CRB checked.
I personally discovered Soft Tissue Therapy when I took up ultra-marathon running on top of a very physical Fire Fighting occupation and ultimately suffered various injuries and postural problems as a result. These were corrected with Clinical Remedial Soft Tissue Therapy and then prevented with regular monthly Sports Massage. My interest in it as a career came from wanting to understand how my long term problems were solved in such a simple way and to help others get the benefit too. It's the anatomical detective work that I am really passionate about. I have worked with professional sports people and alongside orthopaedic consultants. I am now working from New Energy Fitness in Winchester and with All Sports Medicine at the Candover Clinic, North Hants Hospital.
My special interests include Running & Yoga teaching. I qualified in March 2014 as a Yoga Alliance 200hrs Instructor and practice daily in the dynamic Hatha Flow style of Yoga. I am also a keen Ultra-distance Runner. I have competed in various ultra-marathons including 60 miles along the Cornish coast and the Petzl South Downs Way 100 mile run. Through extensive self-experimentation and study of various like-minded patients I have learnt the importance of running form, stretching, drills and technique to prevent injuries. This includes use of 'barefoot' or 'minimalist' styles which are the subject of much debate. I have first-hand experience of this working to help me complete very long distances, in turn, helping me treat and help runners of all distances.
I have also practiced and continue to enjoy Rugby, Kick Boxing, Ju-Jitsu, mountain biking hiking, climbing and most of all, spending time with my wife Nicola, children Euan, Ethan and Olivia & two Italian Spinone dogs Lucca & Bosco.
I use a combination of methods but predominantly use Myofascial Release, Active and Passive Release, Muscle-Energy and Neuromuscular Techniques mixed with Swedish style deep tissue, Deep Oscillation® and Lymphatic drainage massage. I am also qualified in pelvic and thoraco-lumbar manipulation for Athletes.
My aims are to, listen to patients carefully, put them at ease, assess you thoroughly, explain what I find and treat you accordingly. I look at areas of pain but also look for the root cause which may not be where the pain is due to muscular imbalance or compensatory patterns. I can also help you with rehabilitation exercises, stretches and running technique to help you continue improving posture and living life to the full.
